This paper presents the methodology of using short-term monitored data to disaggregate an existing building`s energy use and to calibrate the energy simulation model for the building. The goal of the methods is to help architects and engineers quickly and accurately determine the current energy use and identify any energy-related problems in the building before proposing the retrofit design solutions. Several procedures were developed including systematic data collection, on-off test, short-term energy monitoring, and disaggregation of monthly utility billing data. The procedures were built into a computer program and integrated with a previously developed hourly energy simulation model. The program also guides the user as to which simulation parameters have to be altered in order to match the disaggregated results. Several graphical outputs are produced to help the user visualize the results. The program also presents some guidelines to help the user study different retrofit strategies after the model is calibrated. The program runs on microcomputers in the Window operating system.
