Particle stability of {sup 69}Br
- and others
The nucleus {sup 69}Br was first identified in a search for the termination point of the rp-process. The fragmentation of 65 MeV/nucleon {sup 78}Kr by {sup 58}Ni produced a few events identified as {sup 69}Br. However, no particles were identified as {sup 69}Br in a recent experiment at GANIL that used the fragmentation of {sup 78}Kr at 73 MeV/nucleon. One possible explanation for the latter null result is that the {sup 69}Br half-life is very short and the much longer flight path at the GANIL facility allowed the decay of the {sup 69}Br nuclei. To explore this hypothesis an experiment was carried out at a slightly higher beam energy than that used previously. The fragments from the {sup 78}Kr + {sup 58}Ni reaction at 75 MeV/nucleon were identified at two positions along the beamline separated by {approximately}7.5m. Preliminary results indicate that no {sup 69}Br nuclei were observed at either position. This seems to indicate that {sup 69}Br is not particle stable.
