Abstract

The Alcan Compact Degasser is an efficient trough-based molten aluminum treatment unit designed as an alternative to the existing in-line heated box based degassers. It was shown in Part 1 of this paper that in spite of the Alcan Compact Degasser`s small size, no concessions were made on its metallurgical performances. Various versions of the Alcan Compact Degasser have been used in Alcan for the last two years. This paper first describes the industrial unit and its main characteristics. Then the operational experience with the Alcan Compact Degasser in two Alcan plants is presented.

In-line degassing processes, employing rotary gas injectors, are used extensively in the aluminum industry for removing unwanted impurities from the liquid metal just prior to casting. Although these processes are efficient, and provide the required level of metal treatment, a significant quantity of between one and three tons of metal is retained within the degassing unit between casts. Reduction of perfluorocarbon (PFC) emissions at Alcan`s primary aluminum smelters

Recent studies have indicated that perfluorocarbon (PFC) compounds are powerful greenhouse gases. The principal anthropogenic source of these compounds is believed to be primary aluminum smelters. As a result, most major aluminum producers have initiated programs to reduce PFC emissions. This paper outlines the actions Alcan has taken over the past 6 years to reduce PFC emissions, along with results obtained to date and projections for the future. An explanation of the mechanism of PFC formation is given. In addition, actual measured emission levels are compared to those predicted by models.
Degassing of molten alloys with the assistance of ultrasonic vibration

An apparatus and method are disclosed in which ultrasonic vibration is used to assist the degassing of molten metals or metal alloys thereby reducing gas content in the molten metals or alloys. Thermal subsidence and compaction in sedimentary basins: application to Baltimore Canyon Trough

Cooling, with the subsidence of continental crust, is likely to be an important mechanism for the formation of sedimentary basins. If the lithosphere was initially very thin and sedimentation continued to fill the basin to the original depth of basement, a similarity solution is possible. In this paper the similarity solution is extended to include sediment compaction and a depth-dependent thermal conductivity. The similarity solution is also used to determine the thermal evolution and petroleum potential of sedimentary basins.
