A tungsten organometallic complex as a spectroscopic probe of acrylate polymerization in thin films

The organometallic complex W(CO){sub 4}(4-Me-phen) (4-Me-phen = 4-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline) has been observed to be luminescent and act as a spectroscopic probe in trimethylolpropane triacrylate/poly(methyl methacrylate) thin films. Dual luminescence bands of W(CO){sub 4}(4-Me-phen) are observed at 520 and 750 nm in the unexposed acrylate thin film. On UV excitation of the film, however, the luminescence bands intensify substantially and are shifted to 525 and 715 nm, respectively. The spectral changes are associated with the {open_quotes}rigidochromic effect{close_quotes} exhibited by several organometallic complexes and is attributed to solvation effects about the luminescent metal-to-ligand (MLCT) charge transfer excited states. The results are related to the assignment of the electronic transitions within the MLCT manifold of W(CO){sub 4}(4-Me-phen).
