TRU partitioning from INEL calcine waste
- LITCO, Idaho Falls, ID (United States)
Two solvents have been evaluated for TRU separations from dissolved INEL calcines. The TRUEX solvent (0.2 M octylphenyl-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide and 1.4 M tributylphosphate in an Isopar-L diluent) and a CMP solvent (0.5 M dihexyl-N,N-diethylcarbamoylmethylphosphonate and 1.0 M tributylphosphate in an Isopar-L diluent) were tested with a dissolved calcine simulant. Radioactive isotopes of the elements of interests (TRUs, Tc, Cr, and Zr) were spiked into the simulant to determine the process chemistry of these elements with each solvent. Equal volume batch contacts were performed to establish extraction efficiencies of the solvents, effective scrub and strip solutions and optimum reagent concentrations in these solutions. Two calcine treatment flowsheets to partition the TRUs from this waste stream were proposed from this testing. The two flowsheets include a feed reduction operation to eliminate the extraction of Cr{sup +6} into either solvent, a scrub section to remove extracted zirconium from the solvent while minimizing TRU recycle, a gross actinide stripping section. and a solvent clean-up section.
