Environmental regulations are requiring the chemical industry to increase the use of continuous emissions monitors (CEMs) to measure the release of atmospheric pollutants. This process can be automated by integrating environmental database reporting systems with process control systems. In addition, many states allow the use of neural network technology integrated with process control systems to estimate emissions in lieu of hardware CEMs to measure emissions. This paper will discuss the effort required and the benefits realized by integrating process control and environmental database systems. This paper will discuss the integration with and without the use of neural network technology to estimate emissions.
