Photocatalytic degradation of organophosphorous compounds in an aqueous suspension of TiO{sub 2}

Organophosphorus compounds (i.e. warfare agents and pesticides) are receiving considerable attention due to their high toxicity as pollutants of ground water. These compounds have a phosphorus-carbon bond which is relatively stable and resistant to conventional methods for chemical remediation. One method that is being considered for the treatment of chemically contaminated water is semiconductor photocatalysis. A promising and effective semiconductor currently receiving consideration for such an application is titanium dioxide (TiO{sub 2}). Dimethyl-methyl phosphonate, DMMP, and diethyl-methyl phosphonate, DEMP, were used as models to analyze TiO{sub 2} photocatalyzed decomposition of organophosphorus compounds. Concentration effects of organophosphorus compounds on product formation and degradation kinetic analysis are discussed. The effects of different oxygenation techniques on the rate of decomposition and product formation are described. The. influence of reaction product and pH effects on the reaction rate were analyzed.
