Battery powered vehicles and vehicles that use hydrogen as fuel are exciting alternatives to gasoline- and diesel-fueled vehicles. This publication first reviews trends in electric vehicle use and the use of electric vehicles in railways and urban transit systems. It then reviews recent developments in battery-powered vehicles, hybrid electric and internal combustion vehicles, battery charging systems, hydrogen production and storage, vehicles using hydrogen as a fuel or fuel supplement, and fuel-cell-powered vehicles. A glossary is included.
