It is well known that the macroscopic Coulomb-Amonton`s laws of friction are, in general, inapplicable for the description of the friction conditions observed in machining which are complex, controversial, and largely unknown. A detailed study of the complex interfacial friction conditions at the microscopic level is needed to gain an insight into the problem. The concepts of microscopic interfacial friction are re-examined in this work. Fractal relationships are consequently derived to represent the microscopic friction model at the tool-chip interface. Models are then developed for contact areas of sticking and sliding, frictional forces and work rate in friction.
