The new plutonium isotope, {sup 231}Pu, was produced by the {sup 233}U({sup 3}He,5n){sup 231}Pu reaction. After chemical separation, the {sup 231}Pu decay modes were studied using {alpha}-spectrometry. The isotope, {sup 231}Pu, was unequivocally identified by the {alpha}-decay of the chain members from its {alpha}- and electron-capture daughters using the {alpha}-{alpha}-correlation technique. The half-life of {sup 231}Pu was determined to be (8.6{plus_minus}0.5) min. An {alpha}-group with an energy of (6.72{plus_minus}0.03) MeV was assigned to {sup 231}Pu. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}
