A nonbonded 4 inch inner diameter flexible pipe was fatigue tested in combined axial and in-phase bending loading. The pipe was exposed to two levels of loading, until fatigue failure occurred in the tensile armoring layers. The primary failure mode was fretting fatigue of the inner tensile armoring layer, in the region of the tapered end of the bend stiffener. Secondary failure failures occurred in the outer armoring layer, inside the end termination. The test was monitored by an acoustic emission (AE) detection system. At a stage when no damage could be detected by visual observations, significant AE signals were obtained. Towards the end of life condition, the signals were continuously developing, in phase with the progressive failure of the tensile armor.
