Title: Workshop on modeling data needs

Conference ·
OSTI ID:287558

The need for understanding the impacts of chemical releases has lead to the development of complex computer models that simulate the processes involved during a chemical release incident. Validation of these models has to date depended on the quality of the field test data for real releases and the availability of fundamental physical/chemical and vapor liquid equilibrium data for the chemicals being studied. The absence of physical/chemical and vapor liquid equilibrium data has lead to the development of models that lack the ability to simulate a variety of processing and ambient conditions. To increase the accuracy of the simulation models, the models have become more and more complex calling for more and more fundamental physical/chemical property data and vapor liquid equilibrium data. While it is easy to understand that time and resource limitations prevent defining the impacts of releases by field testing all chemicals for all spill scenarios, it is more difficult to understand that there is an equal limitation in defining the physical chemical properties for all chemicals and all mixtures because engineers tend to work in isolation and duplicate efforts of others in the same position. The objective of this workshop is to highlight options available to address the need for physical/chemical property data form the point of view of the model developers, model user and those developing physical/chemical property databases and physical/chemical estimation protocols.
