Recently, it has been argued that a strong electron-phonon interaction arising from the Jahn-Teller splitting of the outer Mn {ital d} level plays a crucial role in understanding the nonmetal-to-metal transition observed in the La{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}{ital A}{sub {ital x}}MnO{sub 3} ({ital A}=Ca,Sr,Ba) system. We show, by neutron powder diffraction, that La{sub 0.65}Ca{sub 0.35}MnO{sub 3} exhibits an anomalous volume and oxygen/manganese displacement change around {ital T}{sub {ital c}}, in qualitative agreement with the theoretical prediction. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
