Electron-impact cross sections for the process H{sub 2}({ital B}{sup 1}{Sigma}{sup +}{sub {ital u}},{nu}{sub {ital i}})+{ital e}{r_arrow}H{sub 2}({ital I}{sup 1}{Pi}{sub {ital g}})+{ital e} have been calculated as a function of the collision energy and for different vibrational quantum numbers {nu}{sub {ital i}} in the frame of impact-parameter method. Total and dissociative cross sections are compared with those referred to electronic transitions involving the ground electronic state of H{sub 2} ({ital X}{sup 1}{Sigma}{sup +}{sub {ital g}}{r_arrow}{ital B}{sup 1}{Sigma}{sup +}{sub {ital u}} and {ital X}{sup 1}{Sigma}{sup +}{sub {ital g}}{r_arrow}{ital C}{sup 1}{Pi}{sub {ital u}}). Moreover, rate coefficients as a function of the vibrational state of the molecule are reported for different temperatures and for both {ital B}{r_arrow}{ital I} and {ital X}{r_arrow}{ital B} transitions, briefly discussing the role of these two processes in the H{sup {minus}} negative-ion production. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
