This paper describes in detail the results of a series of ECRH experiments with one Gycom gyrotron at 140 GHz, 0.5 MW, carried out on the FTU tokamak at a magnetic field in the range 5{divided_by}5.8 T. The observed wave absorption is strong and localized, typically within 20{percent} of the plasma minor radius. In addition to electron heating (0.8{divided_by}2.5 keV, depending on the electron density), and in spite of the limited pulse length of 15 ms, a significant increase of the neutron yield from deuterium plasmas was observed at the highest electron densities so far achieved during ECRH (1.2{divided_by}1.8 10{sup 20} m{sup {minus}3}). Thermal waves were generated by modulating the heating power, allowing an estimate of the power deposition profile and of the plasma thermal conductivity. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
