Title: Neutron scattering from a collective spin fluctuation mode in a CuO{sub 2} bilayer

Abstract

A resonance in the magnetic scattering of neutrons from superconducting YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} has been observed at a momentum transfer of ({pi}/{ital a},{pi}/{ital a},{pi}/{bar {ital c}}), where {ital a} is the in-plane Cu spacing and {bar {ital c}} is the Cu-Cu bilayer spacing. Here we construct a model of a CuO{sub 2} bilayer and show that a collective {ital S}=1, antiferromagnetic excitation with {ital q}=({pi}/{ital a},{pi}/{ital a},{pi}/{bar {ital c}}) arises if the gap has {ital d}{sub {ital x}{sup 2}{minus}{ital y}{sup 2}} symmetry. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
