Prospects for high precision measurements at the {tau}cF including current achievements of BES
- Institute of High Energy Physics Academia Sinica, P.O. Box 918, Beijing 100039 (China)
Recent progress and the future prospects in the energy regions of the {tau} pair production and the charm meson thresholds is reviewed: Search for gluonia and hybrids, {tau} and {nu}{sub {tau}} physics, Charmonium physics, Charmed meson and baryon physics, {ital D}{minus}{bar {ital D}} mixing, and CP violation. Since data taking started in 1990, the Beijing Spectrometer (BES) at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC) has run at different energy settings covering the {ital J}/{psi} and {psi}{prime} resonances and the {tau} pair and {ital D}{sub {ital s}} production thresholds, leading to significant progress in these areas of particle physics. The merits of a {tau}-charm factory are investigated. It is concluded that a {tau}-charm factory is the ideal tool to explore the {tau} and {nu}{sub {tau}} leptons and the physics of the charm quark providing a deeper understanding of the Standard Model of particle physics and exploring the frontier of its possible extensions. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
