{sup 35}Cl nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and relaxation measurements have been performed in stacked Sr{sub 2}CuO{sub 2}Cl{sub 2} single crystals with N{acute e}el temperature {ital T}{sub {ital N}}=257 K for two crystal orientations with respect to the applied field: {bold H}{parallel}{bold c} and {bold H}{perpendicular}{bold c}. All the parameters of {sup 35}Cl NMR are found to exhibit a strong orientation dependence varying in temperature. In particular, the unconventional anisotropy and strong temperature dependence of the {sup 35}Cl nuclear spin{endash}spin relaxation rate, {ital T}{sup {minus}1}{sub 2}, are presented and discussed in terms of a crossover of the Cu{sup 2+} spin dynamics from Heisenberg to {ital XY}-like correlation for {ital T}{r_arrow}{ital T}{sup +}{sub {ital N}}. The onset of anisotropic broadening and shift of the {sup 35}Cl NMR line was observed well above {ital T}{sub {ital N}}, which is in agreement with the previous results. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
