This paper presents an extension of our previous method to study neutron breakup angular distributions in heavy-ion reactions. We distinguish two cases: elastic and inelastic breakup. In the first case the target is left in its ground state while in the second case the target is left in an excited state. The elastic breakup angular distribution is calculated here by using the eikonal form of the final neutron wave function rather than the plane wave function of our previous work. In this way we include the effect of distortion by the final-state interaction of the neutron with the target optical potential. The neutron angular distribution for inelastic breakup is also obtained for the first time by considering explicitly some possible final excited states of the target. Our theoretical results for the angular distribution and for the total reaction cross section are compared with recent experimental data for the reaction {sup 48}Ca({sup 20}Ne,{sup 19}Ne){sup 49}Ca at {ital E}{sub inc}=48{ital A}MeV. It appears that the inelastic breakup contribution is essential to explain the experimental neutron multiplicity and to properly describe the three body physical background of the inclusive spectra. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
