Photoelectron photoion coincidence and threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence time of flight spectra for O{sub 2} molecules in the 22.20{endash}22.36 eV region have been measured to investigate anisotropy in dissociative photoionization processes. Some of the O{sup +} ions were produced in a particular photodissociation process in which the molecule fragments into an O({sup 3}{ital P}) atom and an excited O{sup {asterisk}}[{sup 2}{ital P}{sup {ital o}}3{ital d}{double_prime}] atom, which autoionizes to produce O{sup +}({sup 2}{ital D}{sup {ital o}})+{ital e}{sup {minus}}(0.16 eV). The O{sup +} spectra present a nonisotropic profile which is interpreted as the result of a photodissociation process producing aligned O{sup {asterisk}} atoms followed by ejection of an electron along the axis of the dissociating molecule. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
