The magnetic transitions in La{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}Ca{sub {ital x}}MnO{sub 3} ({ital x}=0.25,0.50) were studied by synchrotron x-ray and neutron powder diffraction. For {ital x}=0.25 the large {Delta}{ital V}=0.13{percent} at {ital T}{sub {ital C}} is due to the simultaneous insulator-to-metal transition. For {ital x}=0.50 below {ital T}{sub {ital C}} we observed a drastic decrease of the {ital b} axis and an increase of the {ital a} and {ital c} axes, due to a Jahn-Teller distortion of MnO{sub 6} octahedra. The ferromagnetic transition for {ital x}=0.50 is accompanied by an unusual peak broadening terminating at {ital T}{sub {ital N}}. This newly observed behavior can be explained assuming that multiple intermediate phases are simultaneously present in the sample. {copyright} {ital 1995 The American Physical Society.}
