A transient method for measuring diffusion coefficients of thin film battery electrodes: Results for Li{sub y}CoO{sub 2} and Li{sub x}C{sub 6} thin films
- Tufts Univ. Electro-Optics Technology Center, Medford, MA (United States)
The authors describe a relatively easy-to-implement transient technique to obtain, rapidly, a lower bound measure of the chemical diffusion constant, D, especially during in situ measurements on thin film electrodes. The technique allows for on the fly measurements (such as during charging or discharging of an electrochemical cell). It does not require postmeasurement analyses (e.g., curve-fitting, which is often required by other transient techniques) nor does it require long uncertain waiting times for the attainment of equilibrium as required by the original galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) of Weppner and Huggins. Presented are typical data obtained for two thin film electrodes of interest for lithium ion batteries: Li{sub x}C{sub 6} and Li{sub y}CoO{sub 2}.
