Picosecond laser (266 nm) flash photolysis studies of oxygen-saturated solution of napthalene (N) in cyclohexane were performed. Absorbance change consistent with the conversion of N(S) to N(T) by two independent processes were observed. A slower component ({tau}=4 ns) was identified as the normal diffusive conversion of S{sub 1} {r_arrow} T{sub 1} by induced intersystem crossing. A rapid component ({tau}=200 ps) was tentatively identified as a conversion of a photoexcited {sup 3}(N*...O{sub 2}) triplet exciplex state to the free molecular T{sub 1} state. 12 refs., 3 figs.
