MeLi reacts with Me{sub 5}C{sub 5}M(acac) to give the trinuclear clusters (Me{sub 5}C{sub 5}){sub 3}M{sub 3}({mu}{sub 3}-CH)({mu}-H) (M = Co, Ni). The 49-electron nickel cluster is paramagnetic with one unpaired electron, and the 46-electron cobalt cluster is also paramagnetic; the latter reacts with dihydrogen to give diamagnetic (Me{sub 5}C{sub 5}){sub 3}Co{sub 3}({mu}{sub 3}-CH)({mu}-H){sub 3}. 10 refs., 2 figs.
