Chlorination of phenolic compounds in aqueous solution leads to the formation of a mixture of chlorinated phenols over a broad range of pH values and with concentration of phenols as little as 0.05mg/L. Most phenolic compounds are present in wastewaters from petrochemical, coal tar, plastic and pesticidal chemical industries. Since water treatment techniques have been developed adequately to remove toxic substances, chlorophenols can be eliminated completely by such methods as UV-initiated photo-oxidation with chemical reagents. Based on the photosensitization of semiconductor materials such as titanium dioxide, Matthews, D`Olivera and Tseng reported the heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of chlorophenols for the possibility of their decontamination. The present investigation was to study the degradation of polychlorophenols in aqueous solution by the use of UV/TiO{sub 2} system, including the batchwise treatment of 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, and 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol at various controlled pH-regimes.
