Quadrupole couplings and magnetic shielding anisotropy of technetium-99 in TcO{sub 4}{sup -} anion
- Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Moscow (Russian Federation)
Free pertechnetate anion TcO{sub 4}{sup -} in solutions exhibits the tetrahedral T{sub d} symmetry. In solid state, TcO{sub 4}{sup -} experiences slight structural distortions. A splitting of the antisymmetric {nu}{sub 3} vibrational frequency usually serves as a qualitative criterion of the TcO{sub 4}{sup -} distortion. However, the distortion derived from the {nu}{sub 3} splittings is inconsistent with that determined by X-ray crystallography. Earlier, the authors have shown for a series of scheelite-like pertechnetates that the TcO{sub 4}{sup -} distortions are quantitatively characterized by the {sup 99}Tc quadrupole coupling constant (QCC). According to the QCC values, the greatest distortion should be expected for sodium and silver pertechnetates. The structural distortion of TcO{sub 4}{sup -} is caused by asymmetric electron distribution in the anion, which would manifest itself in anisotropy of {sup 99}Tc magnetic shielding.
