The structures of the bixbyite-type sesquioxides, M{sub 2}O{sub 3}(M = In, Tl, Sc, Y, Ln) are analyzed in terms of their cation arrays. In all cases, with the exception of Yb{sub 2}O{sub 3}, the M-M distances in the oxides are comparable to those of their parent metal. Topologically, the cation aggregates present in the oxides are fragments of the hcp, fcc, bcc, or oct elemental structures.
