Title: Precise measurements of isotopic ratios in light gases using an MI 1201 mass spectrometer

Abstract

Measurements of isotopic helium ratios are frequently required in geochemistry and cosmology, and when developing nuclear fusion reactors. The authors modified a mass spectrometer to prepare for an experiment to detect the chemical shift in tritium`s half-life measuring isotopic helium ratios. The ratios {sup 3}He/{sup 4}He in the authors samples ranged from 10{sup -3} to 10{sup -1}, and hence a mass spectrometer with a simple ion-optic configuration can be utilized. At the same time, the reducibility of the measurements in the spectrometer has to be better than in multistage and dynamic devices, which is very important when detecting small variations in the {sup 3}He/{sup 4}He ratio in tritium-doped samples due to variations in the electronic environment of a triton. So, the author`s choice of the device and its modification were to improve the accuracy of the isotopic ratios derived from these conditions.
