The BR2 reactor a major european radioisotope producer
- Belgian Nuclear Research Center, SCK.CEN, Boeretang 200, B-2400 Mol (Belgium)
The BR2 reactor is a major high flux engineering test reactor operated by the Belgian Nuclear Research Center SCK-CEN. The total thermal power can reach 100 MW. Since the early eighties the production of radioisotopes has become of increasing importance. The availability of high thermal, epithermal and fast fluxes allows routine production of radioisotopes of high specific activity for medical applications ( diagnostic, therapeutic and palliative) and industrial use. Presently BR2 is one of the major European radioisotope suppliers. Since several years the annual operation schedules of the major European research reactors involved in radioisotope production are coordinated in order to ensure a continuous supply of {sup 99}Mo.
