  1. King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia)

A team from King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, the authority that supervises all nuclear activities in the country, has set the foundations for a national-radioactive waste management program in Saudi Arabia, in cooperation with a team from King Abdulaziz University. The program targets are to collect all necessary information of radwastes, to select appropriate sites for storage facilities, and to provide design specifications for such a facility. For this purpose an extensive survey of all radioactive wastes in the country was made and classified according to quantity, type of radioactivity, sealed or unsealed, physical and chemical forms. Visits were made to locations where radionuclide sources are expected to be found including medical, scientific, and industrial centers in at least 15 different cities. A careful review and assessments of waste disposal practices were made in each location. Radiation monitoring and surveillance were also performed in each location to check the appropriateness of the safety practices followed. Limits on doses, concentrations of radionuclides in unrestricted areas, and concentrations of radioactivity released into sanitary sewage were recommended. After the collection of all necessary data, a study will be made as to the anticipated future expansion in the use of radionuclides and the volume of radioactive waste expected to be generated over the next 30 years. A complete design of waste conditioning and storage facilities, will be provided. Specifications will be provided for equipment necessary for waste processing such as compaction, incineration or chemical treatments and a program for environmental monitoring in the vicinity of radioactive waste sites will be formulated.
