Title: Luminescence properties of Tb{sup 3+} and Eu{sup 3+} doped beyerite CaBi{sub 2}O{sub 2}(CO{sub 3}){sub 2}

Abstract

Highlights: • Synthesis of Tb{sup 3+}, Eu{sup 3+} doped and codoped (Tb{sup 3+}/Eu{sup 3+}) beyerite, CaBi{sub 2}O{sub 2}(CO{sub 3}){sub 2}. • Excellent luminescent properties in the visible region. • Tunable colors by varying Tb{sup 3+} to Eu{sup 3+} ratio using beyerite as the host lattice. - Abstract: Mineral Beyerite belonging to the sillen family consisting of [Bi{sub 2}O{sub 2}]{sup 2+} layers along with Ca{sup 2+} ions possesses a layer sequence of (Bi{sub 2}O{sub 2}){sup 2+}- CO{sub 3}{sup 2−}- Ca{sup 2+} - CO{sub 3}{sup 2−}- (Bi{sub 2}O{sub 2}){sup 2+} in such a way that the plane of the (CO{sub 3}){sup 2−} group is orthogonal to the plane of the layer. By employing a single step hydrothermal process, beyerite, Tb{sup 3+}, Eu{sup 3+} incorporated beyerite along with codoped Tb{sup 3+}/Eu{sup 3+} samples of beyerite have been successfully synthesized. The samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction combined with Rietveld refinement, fourier transform infrared spectra, diffuse reflectance and photoluminescent measurements. Emission characteristics of Tb{sup 3+} and Eu{sup 3+} samples under excitation in the UV region showed excellent luminescent properties in the visible region confirming the presence of rare earth dopants.
