Title: Molecular and crystal structure of 2-((E)-[(4-Methylphenyl)imino]methyl)-4-nitrophenol: A redetermination

Abstract

The crystal structure of the title compound, C{sub 14}H{sub 12}N{sub 2}O{sub 3}, was recently determined as a mixture of its neutral (OH containing) and zwitterionic (NH containing) forms, in a 0.60 (4): 0.40 (4) ratio using the X-ray determination. In this study, the title compound has been characterized by FT-IR and X-ray diffraction. The redetermination showed that the title compound has only enol (OH) form because of lack of the NH stretching vibration in FT-IR spectrum. In addition, the molecular structure and tautomerism of the title compound have been discussed.

  • During studies of the structures of the complexes Cr(bpm){sub 2}Cl{sub 2}{sup +}, Cr(bpm){sub 3}{sup 3+}, and Cr(dpp){sub 3}{sup 3+} (where bpm = 2,2{prime}-bipyridine and dpp = 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine), comparison of their structures to that of (Cr(bpy){sub 3})(PF{sub 3}){sub 3} showed differences that could not be rationalized. The structure of the latter compound has been investigated and is reported herein. The results indicate that there was a missed center of symmetry that led to the distorted geometry of the structure previously reported for (Cr(bpy){sub 3})(PF{sub 6}){sub 3} resulting from the R32 refinement. Addition of an inversion center midway between the two cationsmore » was found to generate a 3 site at (0, 0, 1/4). The model obtained from the R3c refinement was found to have chemically reasonable distances and angles that compare favorably with the geometry observed for Cr(bpy){sub 3}{sup 3+} cation of a perchlorate salt which co-crystallizes with bipyridinium perchlorate. 9 refs., 1 fig., 3 tabs.« less
  • Two antiviral agents, namely, 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone and 4-[(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)imino]methyl-1,2-benzodiol, are studied by X-ray diffraction. The stereochemical features of the molecular structures of the compounds under investigation are discussed, and the possible correlation between the structure and biological activity with respect to hepatitis C virus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase is analyzed.
  • The title compound, C{sub 29}H{sub 23}NO{sub 2}, has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at two different temperatures (303 K and 120 K) and wavelengths (MoK{sub {alpha}} and CuK{sub {alpha}}). The non-centrosymmetric hexagonal crystal structure contains four-membered planar {beta}-lactam ring with an unusually long C-C bond. The {beta}-lactam ring is almost planar.
  • The titled compound has been synthesized by reaction of 4′-methylacetophenon with 4-hydrox-ybenzohydrazide in presence of catalytic amount of glacial acetic acid. The compound is characterized by elemental analysis, IR, {sup 1}H NMR, {sup 13}C NMR and UV-visible spectra. The crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction method. Both X-ray data and NMR spectra indicate that the molecule exists in a trans configuration with respect to the C=N bond. The observation of strong ν(C=O) peak in IR spectra of the aroylhydrazone compound suggests that it is in keto form in solid state. X-ray diffraction results confirm this suggestion.   • The structure of Wallach's compound, C/sub 7/H/sub 4/O/sub 3/NCl/sub 9/, prepared in 1874 from concentrated aqueous solutions of potassium cyanide and chloral hydrate, has long been undecided. By single crystal X-ray crystallography it has now been established as trans-2,5-bis(trichloromethyl)-N-(1'-hydroxy-2',2',2'-trichloroethyl)-4-imino-1,3-dioxolane, confirming the tentative assignment by /sup 1/H and /sup 13/C NMR spectrography. The title compound is monoclinic, P2/sub 1//c; a = 8.445 (1), b = 10.948(1), c = 17.923(4) A; ..beta.. = 94.36(1)/sup 0/; Z = 4. The structure was solved by direct methods, from data collected at room temperature on an Enraf-Nonius CAD4 diffractometer, and refined by least squares tomore » a final R value of 0.041 using 2101 reflections.« less
