Title: Lattice modes of the chirally pure and racemic phases of tyrosine crystals

Abstract

High-Q librational modes have been found to be present in the infrared absorption and Raman spectra of chirally pure L-tyrosine. Such modes can serve as terahertz radiation detectors and generators in chirally pure biostructures.

  • A new formulation of lattice gauge theory with fermionic degrees of freedom is presented and analyzed. Arguments are given which imply that, unlike all previous local prescriptions, the present one allows the implementation of chiral symmetry without leading to the doubling of fermion species. This permits the lattice regularization of theories with handed fermions.
  • We develop an analytical technique for examining the phase structure of [ital Z][sub 2], U(1), and SU(2) lattice Higgs-Yukawa systems with radially frozen Higgs fields and chirally invariant lattice fermion actions. The method is based on the variational mean-field approximation. We analyze the phase diagrams of such systems with different forms of lattice fermion action and demonstrate that they depend crucially both on the symmetry group and on the form of the action. We discuss the location in the diagrams of possible nontrivial fixed points relevant to continuum physics and argue that such points can exist only in the [italmore » Z][sub 2] system with the SLAC action and in the U(1) systems with the naive or SLAC action.« less
  • We present results for the matrix elements relevant for proton decay in grand unified theories (GUTs). The calculation is performed at a fixed lattice spacing a{sup -1}=1.73(3) GeV using 2+1 flavors of domain-wall fermions on lattices of size 16{sup 3}x32 and 24{sup 3}x64 with a fifth dimension of length 16. We use the indirect method which relies on an effective field theory description of proton decay, where we need to estimate the low-energy constants, {alpha}=-0.0112(25) GeV{sup 3} and {beta}=0.0120(26) GeV{sup 3}. We relate these low-energy constants to the proton decay matrix elements using leading order chiral perturbation theory. These canmore » then be combined with experimental bounds on the proton lifetime to bound parameters of individual GUTs.« less
