Title: Photonuclear reactions on the cadmium isotopes {sup 106,108}Cd at the bremsstrahlung endpoint energy of 55.5 MeV

Abstract

The gamma-activation technique was used to measure the absolute yields of photonuclear reactions on the cadmium isotopes {sup 106,108}Cd. The results obtained in this way were compared with the results of the calculations based on the statistical model. For reactions on the isotope {sup 108}Cd, agreement between these theoretical and experimental results is good, but the experimental ratio of the yields of photoproton and photoneutron reactions on the isotope {sup 106}Cd differs substantially from its theoretical counterpart. The results of our present study are discussed from the point of view of the production of bypassed nuclei in the p-process of nucleosynthesis.

  • Yields of photonuclear-reaction products formed in targets from separated tin isotopes under the effect of beams of bremsstrahlung photons whose endpoint energy is 4.5 GeV were investigated. The systematization performed on this basis revealed an isoscaling character of the behavior of the production yields for various regions of reaction-product masses.
  • /sup 106/In has been studied via the reaction /sup 106/Cd(p,n..gamma..)/sup 106/In in the energy range E/sub p/ = 7--9 MeV. In-beam ..gamma..-ray excitation functions, ..gamma..-..gamma.. coincidence measurements, and ..beta../sup +/-delayed ..gamma..-ray excitation functions have been used to identify thirteen levels in /sup 106/In. From this new level scheme the energy separation of the high-spin ground state and the low-spin isomer has been determined to be 28.6 +- 0.5 keV. The threshold energy of the strongest low-lying ..gamma..-ray transition yields a mass excess for /sup 106/In of -80601 +- 15 keV. Spins for some states are suggested by comparing the excitationmore » functions to Hauser-Feshbach calculations. In-beam ..gamma..-ray excitation functions for the /sup 108/Cd(p,n..gamma..)/sup 108/In reaction give a mass excess for the 3/sup +/ ..beta../sup +/-decaying state in /sup 108/In of -84018 +- 12 keV. The systematics of odd-odd In nuclei are discussed in a j-j coupling model.« less
  • The induced-activity method is used to measure yields of photonuclear reactions induced in stable mercury isotopes by beams of bremsstrahlung photons whose spectra have the endpoint energies of 19.5 and 29.1 MeV. On the basis of a collective model, the partial cross sections and yields are calculated for photoproton and photoneutron reactions on these isotopes. The yields calculated theoretically are compared with their measured counterparts. The possibility for the production in photonuclear reactions of the bypassed nucleus {sup 196}Hg, which cannot be formed in astrophysical r and s processes, is analyzed.
  • Electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS) are used to produce high charge state heavy ion beams for the use of nuclear and materials science, for instance. The most powerful ECR ion sources today are superconducting. One of the problems with superconducting ECR ion sources is the use of high radio frequency (RF) power which results in bremsstrahlung radiation adding an extra heat load to the cryostat. In order to understand the electron heating process and timescales in the ECR plasma, time evolution measurement of ECR bremsstrahlung was carried out. In the measurements JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS was operated in amore » pulsed mode and bremsstrahlung data from several hundred RF pulses was recorded. Time evolution of ion production was also studied and compared to one of the electron heating theories. To analyze the measurement data at C++ program was developed. Endpoint energies of the bremsstrahlung spectra as a function of axial magnetic field strength, pressure and RF power are presented and ion production timescales obtained from the measurements are compared to bremsstrahlung emission timescales and one of the stochastic heating theories.« less
