Title: The PETRA III extension

Abstract

The 3{sup rd} generation low-emittance 6 GeV PETRA III facility has been substantially modified to add new beamlines. This extension project involved the complete removal and reconstruction of part of the storage ring with a double-bend achromat lattice as well as the construction of two new experimental halls. Making use of two long straight sections and a canted undulator scheme in the rebuilt arcs, up to ten new insertion device beamlines can be accommodated. In the current phase of the project, seven insertion device and one bending magnet beamline are being implemented.

  • DESY presently operates 14 independent insertion device (ID) beamlines at its 6 GeV storage ring PETRA III. Besides the 2 m long standard undulators U29 and U32, several special IDs of up to 5 m length have been installed to meet the experimental requests for high energy X-rays, elliptically polarized light, and a higher degree of coherence. Two additional half octants of the ring have recently been reconstructed, in order to extend the experimental capabilities at PETRA III. The straight sections also allow for installation of IDs of 2 m or 5 m length. This article gives an overview ofmore » the ID key parameters, the spectral properties and the brilliance of the current undulators installed at PETRA III. It also presents the characteristics of some of the upcoming special IDs, like in-vacuum and short undulators.« less
  • The photon beamline frontend design for the new insertion device (ID) beamlines of the PETRA III extension project will be presented. The design is based on the concepts developed for the photon beamline frontends at PETRA III. This generic design approach minimized the number of specialized components for all beamlines. The girder concept with kinematic mounts at each girder allowed a fast and reliable installation phase. The extension beamlines are located in two new additional buildings. There will be 4 sectors with two undulator IDs in each sector with a canting angle of 20 mrad between the insertion devices. Additionally,more » two straight sections and a bending magnet chamber will be modified: one straight section will be transformed to a side station sector, the straight section with the 40 m long damping wiggler will be used as a hard X-ray source, and the bending magnet will serve as a soft-X-ray source.« less
  • The two-photon processes being studied by the PLUTO group at PETRA are discussed from the point of view of study of color symmetry. The reaction which is cleanest theoretically is the annihilation of two photons into two hadron jets with large transverse momentum. The PLUTO results for this process are compared with calculations using QCD and the calculations in the model of electrostrong interactions with violation of color symmetry. It is not clear whether the departure of the experimental results from QCD is due to an important role of higher twists or to the violation of color symmetry. (AIP)
  • Physics results which have been obtained in electron-positron interactions at the PETRA storage ring are reviewed. These include tests of QED, observations of electroweak effects, hadron jet production, quark-gluon bremsstrahlung and two photon physics. In addition, several searches for new particles have been done. These include searches for new leptons, quarks, free quarks, Higgs particles, technipions and supersymmetric particles.
  • We study the possibility that the monojet events seen at the CERN SPS collider are produced by Z decays into light scalars. These monojet events should also be seen at PETRA.
