Title: Synthesis, structural and optical characterization of APbX{sub 3} (A=methylammonium, dimethylammonium, trimethylammonium; X=I, Br, Cl) hybrid organic-inorganic materials

Abstract

In this paper we report the synthesis, the crystal structure and the optical response of APbX{sub 3} (A=MA, DMA, and TMA; X=I, Br) hybrid organic-inorganic materials including some new phases. We observe that as the cation group increases in size, the optical absorption edge shifts to higher energies with energy steps which are systematic and independent on the anion. A linear correlation between the optical bad gap and the tolerance factor has been shown for the series of samples investigated. - Graphical abstract: The crystal structure and the optical response of the two series of hybrid organic-inorganic materials APbX{sub 3} (A=MA, DMA, and TMA; X=I, Br), which include some new phases, are reported. A dependence of crystal structure and band-gap with tolerance factor is shown. Display Omitted - Highlights: • DMAPbI{sub 3}, TMAPbI{sub 3} and TMAPbBr{sub 3} are reported as new hybrid organic-inorganic compounds. • Crystal structure and optical properties as a function of the number of methyl groups are provided. • Correlation between structure and optical properties are given as a function of tolerance factor.

  • Two new organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, [Ga(phen)(H{sub 1.5}PO{sub 4}){sub 2}].H{sub 2}O (1) and [Ga(phen)(HPO{sub 4})(H{sub 2}PO{sub 4})].1.5H{sub 2}O (2) (phen=1,10-phenanthroline), have been synthesized by hydrothermal methods and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Their structures consist of 1-D chains of strictly alternating GaO{sub 4}N{sub 2} octahedra and phosphate tetrahedra. The phen ligands in both compounds bind in a bidentate fashion to the gallium atoms and the 1-D structures extend into 3-D supramolecular arrays via {pi}-{pi} stacking interactions of phen ligands and hydrogen bonds. {sup 2}H MAS NMR spectroscopy was applied to study themore » deuterated sample of 1 which contains very short hydrogen bonds with an O-O distance of 2.406(2) A. Crystal data for 1: monoclinic, space group C2/c (No. 15), a=11.077(1) A, b=21.496(2) A, c=7.9989(7) A, {beta}=127.211(2){sup o}, and Z=4. The crystal symmetry is the same for 2 as for 1 except a=27.555(2) A, b=6.3501(5) A, c=21.327(2) A, {beta}=122.498(1){sup o}, and Z=8.« less
  • The phosphonocarboxylic acid H(HO{sub 3}PCH{sub 2}){sub 2}NH-CH{sub 2}C{sub 6}H{sub 4}-COOH (H{sub 5} L ) was synthesized and characterized by NMR- and IR-spectroscopy, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Reactions of H{sub 5} L with samarium(III) chloride and calcium(II) chloride resulted in three new compounds, Sm[(O{sub 3}PCH{sub 2}){sub 2}NH-CH{sub 2}C{sub 6}H{sub 4}-COOH].H{sub 2}O (1), Ca[H(O{sub 3}PCH{sub 2}){sub 2}NH-CH{sub 2}C{sub 6}H{sub 4}-COOH].H{sub 2}O (2), and Ca[(HO{sub 3}PCH{sub 2}){sub 2}NH-CH{sub 2}C{sub 6}H{sub 4}-COOH]{sub 2}.4H{sub 2}O (3). The single-crystal structure determination of the title compounds reveals that in H{sub 5} L as well as in compounds 1, 2, and 3 zwitterions are present.more » Within the M-O building units of the metal phosphonates we observed a different degree of dimensionality, depending on the oxidation state of the metal ion and the synthesis conditions. In 1, one-dimensional chains of edge-sharing SmO{sub 8} polyhedra are observed while in 2, isolated units of edge-sharing CaO{sub 6} octahedra and in 3 isolated CaO{sub 6} octahedra are observed. However, looking at the organic part, the rigid phenyl carboxylic acid moieties arrange in a 'zipper-like' fashion and hydrogen bonding plays an important role in the stabilization of the crystal structure. The title compounds were further characterized by IR spectroscopy and TG analysis. Additionally, the thermal stability of 1 was investigated by temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction. -- Graphical abstract: Hydrothermal reactions of the phosphonocarboxylic acid H(HO{sub 3}PCH{sub 2}){sub 2}NH-CH{sub 2}C{sub 6}H{sub 4}-COOH with Sm{sup 3+} and Ca{sup 2+} salts has led to three new inorganic-organic hybrid compounds. All crystal structures contain phosphonate zwitterions and have a layer-like arrangement. The rigid organic groups arrange in a 'zipper-like' fashion and hydrogen bonding plays an important role in the stabilization of the crystal structures.« less
  • The [(C{sub 2}N{sub 2}H{sub 9})VF(PO{sub 4})] compound has been synthesized by hydrothermal techniques under autogeneous pressure at 170 deg. C. The compound was characterized from X-ray powder diffraction data with the Rietveld method. Its crystal structure consists of sheets linked by the ethylenediammonium cations and constructed by chains of VO{sub 3}F{sub 2}N octahedra. The thermal study indicates that the compound is stable up to 290 deg. C. In the IR spectrum the bands of both the ethylenediammonium and phosphate ions are observed. From the reflectance diffuse spectrum the Dq and Racah parameters have been calculated. The magnetic measurements indicate themore » presence of antiferromagnetic interactions.« less

Moreover, those related hexagonal hexa-metal cluster sandwiched tungstoantimonates have been also summarized and compared.
