Title: Effect of dynamical non-neutrality on the modulational instability of laser propagating through hot magnetoplasma

Abstract

In this work, modulational instability of a laser pulse in a hot magnetized plasma is investigated. Nonlinear relativistic equation, describing the amplitude evolution of a laser with finite longitudinal and transversal structure, is obtained. Taking into account the plasma dynamical non-neutrality caused by the ponderomotive force, the growth rate of the modulational instability is derived. Effect of the pulse length on the instability growth rate is investigated.

  • This paper presents a rigorous theoretical investigation of the filamentation and modulational instabilities of an upper hybrid laser radiation in a hot, collisionless and homogeneous plasma in the presence of the self-generated dc magnetic field of the order of a few megagauss. Fluid equations have been employed to find the nonlinear response of electrons. The low-frequency nonlinearity p arises through the ponderomotive force on electrons, whereas the high-frequency nonlinearity arises through the current densities associated with the scattered sidebands. It is observed that the growth rate of the filamentation instability decreases with increasing magnetic field, while the growth rate ofmore » the modulational instability increases with increasing magnetic field. Furthermore, the growth rate of the filamentation instability is higher by about one order of magnitude than that of the modulational instability for the same set of plasma parameters.« less
  • Self-guided nonlinear propagation of intense circularly-polarized electromagnetic waves in a hot electron-positron-ion magnetoplasma is studied. Using a relativistic fluid model, a nonlinear equation is derived, which describes the interaction of the electromagnetic wave with the plasma in the quasi-neutral approximation. Transverse Eigen modes, the nonlinear dispersion relation and the group velocity are obtained. Results show that the transverse profile in the case of magnetized plasma with cylindrical symmetry has a radially damping oscillatory form. Effect of applying external magnetic fields, existence of the electron-positron pairs, changing the amplitude of the electromagnetic wave, and its polarization on the nonlinear dispersion relationmore » and Eigen modes are studied.« less
  • Modulational instability of a high power laser radiation in a homogeneous unmagnetized piezoelectric semiconductor plasma has been investigated analytically. The fluid equations of quantum hydrodynamics coupled with the Maxwell's equations have been employed to find the nonlinear response of electrons in the piezoelectric semiconductor. The analysis is carried out through the derivation of the nonlinear dispersion relation for the four-wave modulational instability. An expression for the growth rate of the instability including the quantum effect due to Bohm potential has been obtained from the nonlinear dispersion relation. The quantum effect is observed to play a vital role in the four-wavemore » scattering process. For a particular set of parameters, the quantum effect enhances the growth rate of the modulational instability by 37% compared to the growth rate predicted by the classical theory.« less
  • The present study is aimed to investigate the problem of modulation instability of an intense laser beam in the hot magnetized plasma. The propagation of intense circularly polarized laser beam along the external magnetic field is considered using a relativistic fluid model. The nonlinear equation describing the interaction of laser pulse with magnetized hot plasma is derived in the quasi-neutral approximation, which is valid for hot plasma. Nonlinear dispersion equation for hot plasma is obtained. For left- and right-hand polarizations, the growth rate of instability is achieved and the effect of temperature, external magnetic field, and kind of polarization onmore » the growth rate is considered. It is observed that for the right-hand polarization, increase of magnetic field leads to the increasing of growth rate. Also for the left-hand polarization, increase of magnetic field inversely causes decrease of the growth rate.« less
  • The modulational instability of right-hand circularly polarized electromagnetic electron cyclotron (CPEM-EC) wave in a magnetized quantum plasma is studied taking into account the collisional effects. Employing quantum hydrodynamic and nonlinear Schr√∂dinger equations, the dispersion relation of modulated CPEM-EC wave in a collisional plasma has been derived. It is found that this wave is unstable in such a plasma system and the growth rate of the associated instability depends on various parameters such as electron Fermi temperature, plasma number density, collision frequency, and modulation wavenumber. It is shown that while the increase of collision frequency leads to increase of the growthmore » rate of instability, especially at large wavenumber limit, the increase of plasma number density results in more stable modulated CPEM-EC wave. It is also found that in contrast to collisionless plasma in which modulational instability is restricted to small wavenumbers, in collisional plasma, the interval of instability occurrence can be extended to a large domain.« less
