Title: Measurements of the reactor neutron power in absolute units

Abstract

The neutron power of the reactor of the Yenisei space nuclear power plant is measured in absolute units using the modernized method of correlation analysis during the ground-based tests of the Yenisei prototypes. Results of the experiments are given. The desired result is obtained in a series of experiments carried out at the stage of the plant preparation for tests. The acceptability of experimental data is confirmed by the results of measuring the reactor neutron power in absolute units at the nominal level by the thermal balance during the life cycle tests of the ground prototypes.

  • In this paper in-core absolute neutron spectra are measured for high-enriched uranium (HEU) and low-enriched uranium (LEU) materials which test reactor fuel using multiple foil activation. The measurements were made in special fuel elements configured to simulate a regular fuel element but that permitted reproducible insertion of a wide range of samples. The measured subcadmium LEU flux was 14% less than the HEU fuel, which is within the experimental uncertainty of the 19% calculated value. There was no observed difference between the fast spectra. A separate spectral unfolding of just the LEU fast flux yielded reasonable agreement with proton-recoil measurements.
  • The theoretical principles of neutron density measurements by the activation method are briefly shown. The experimental method consisting in phosphorus activation followed by absolute measurement of its activity in liquid scintillator is described. Some results of measurements in the reactor are included. (auth)
  • Absolute measurements of neutron fluxes by activation, using a device equipped with a front window GeigerMueller counter, achieved up to 10% accuracy. The absolute magnitude of thermal neutrons in a vibrating reactor channel was (4.23 plus or minus 0.36) x 10/sup 13/ n/cm/sup 2/ sec. (R.V.J.)
