Title: Structural investigation of Li{sub 2}O-Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3}-B{sub 2}O{sub 3} glasses

Abstract

The structural properties of x Li{sub 2}O(30-x)Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3}-70B{sub 2}O{sub 3}; x = 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mol %, glasses were investigated by means of FT-IR measurement technique. The IR analysis of the present glass system shows that with increase in lithium oxide content (x{<=}15 mol%), the frequency bands in the higher region shift towards lower wavenumber, suggest the conversion of BO{sub 3} to BO{sub 4} structural units, which in turn give rise to the formation of Non Bridging Oxygen's (NBOs). For further increase in lithium oxide content (x>15 mol %), the frequency bands shift towards higher wavenumber indicate the formation of Bridging Oxygen's (BOs).
