Synthesis and characterization of (CdSe)(ZnS) semiconductor nanocrystals
Abstract
Nearly monodisperse CdSe nanocrystals are modified by the addition of organo-Zn and S to a hot organic reaction medium using a synthesis derived from previously reported methods. Difficulties in earlier optical experiments of CdSe were attributed to unpassivated surface traps. Capping the CdSe with ZnS eliminates these surface traps as seen in the stronger band edge fluorescence and presumably confines the electron-hole pair to the core CdSe. The absorption and emission spectra of (CdSe)(ZnS) show features which are shifted relative to those of CdSe. These nanostructures are characterized with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and powder x-ray diffraction. Their optical properties are studied with one-photon and two-photon time resolved spectroscopy.
