Title: Longitudinally diode-pumped quasi-continuous Yb{sup 3+}, Er{sup 3+}:LSB laser

Abstract

A quasi-continuous output power of 1.1 W is generated at 1.56 {mu}m in a longitudinally pumped Yb{sup 3+}, Er{sup 3+}:LaSc{sub 3}(BO{sub 3}){sub 4} (Yb,Er:LSB) crystal. The lasing efficiencies of the Yb, Er:LSB laser and Er:phosphate glass laser are compared under the same pump conditions. (lasers)

  • cw pumped laser emission on six different wavelengths is obtained for the first time in a LiYF/sub 4/:15% Er/sup 3 +/ crystal at room temperature under diode laser excitation for 2.66, 2.716, 2.81 ..mu..m emissions and under argon ion laser excitation for 2.77, 2.81, 2.84, 2.85 ..mu..m emissions. Threshold of 5 mW absorbed power at 0.795 ..mu..m (diode) is obtained for the 2.81 ..mu..m wavelength. Time and power evolution of the laser emissions are presented. The type of up-conversion taking place during 2.81 ..mu..m laser emission is shown to be of the addition of photons by energy transfer (APTE) typemore » involving a two-photon summation which depopulates the /sup 4/I/sub 11//sub ///sub 2/ rather than the /sup 4/I/sub 13//sub ///sub 2/ state as up to now believed.« less
  • The spectral and lasing characteristics of a Nd{sup 3+}:NaLa(MoO{sub 4}){sub 2} crystal longitudinally diode-pumped without pump-wavelength stabilisation are studied. A variation in the output power did not exceed 30% when the pump wavelength was changed in the spectral region from 0.794 to 0.811 {mu}m. (lasers)
  • A theoretical analysis is made of the main factors limiting the maximum attainable gains in laser-pumped glasses (/sup 4/I/sub 13/2/--/sup 4/I/sub 15/2/ transition in Er/sup 3 +/ ions) activated with Yb/sup 3 +/ and Er/sup 3 +/ ions. It is shown that, in principle, the spectroscopic and lasing parameters of the glasses make it possible to obtain gains of up to 0.8--1 cm/sup -1/, the main limiting factor being superradiance. Experimental measurements were made of the short pulse gains in phosphate-based glasses activated with Yb/sup 3 +/ and Er/sup 3 +/ ions at the highest possible pumping levels and themore » results were compared with the theoretical analysis.« less
  • Highly efficient saturation up-conversion (UC) luminescent Y2O3:Er3+ microspheres have been successfully prepared via a hydrothermal-homogeneous precipitation method. Bright visible luminescence can be clearly seen with a 1.55 mu m laser diode excitation power as low as similar to 0.03 W cm(-2). The up-conversion (UC) emission spectra indicate that the strongest red emission with a peak situated at similar to 660 nm originated from the I-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition of Er3+. The peaks situated at similar to 520 and 550 nm can be assigned to the transition from H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2) state to the ground state of Er3+. The high efficient saturation up-conversionmore » emission is related to the highly crystalline structure. These results indicate a new way to enhance UC radiation in rare-earth ion-doped materials prepared using a hydrothermal-homogeneous precipitation method.« less
