Title: Waveguide submillimetre laser with a uniform output beam

Abstract

A method for producing non-Gaussian light beams with a uniform intensity profile is described. The method is based on the use of a combined waveguide quasi-optical resonator containing a generalised confocal resonator with an inhomogeneous mirror with absorbing inhomogeneities discretely located on its surface and a hollow dielectric waveguide whose size satisfies the conditions of self-imaging of a uniform field in it. The existence of quasi-homogeneous beams at the output of an optically pumped 0.1188-mm waveguide CH{sub 3}OH laser with a amplitude-stepped mirror is confirmed theoretically and experimentally.   • A multifunctional single-frequency submillimetre (sub-mm) optically pumped laser with rapid replacement of the active medium was investigated experimentally. The output characteristics of the laser were obtained for different parameters of the medium and the cavity. The lasing frequency shift of the sub-mm laser was studied as a function of the pump frequency ({approx}39 Hz kHz{sup -1}). A method of stabilising the frequency of the sub-mm laser by phase locking to a microwave frequency synthesiser is briefly described. (control of laser radiation parameters)
  • The waveguide design of a laser heterostructure is optimised to expand the laser beam in the vertical direction at the output mirror of a laser diode (up to 1.5 {mu}m at the half intensity for the zero mode). Experimental samples of such diodes operated in the cw transverse single-mode lasing regime up to the output power of 0.5 W. The radiation divergence was 11{sup 0}-12{sup 0} and 4{sup 0}-7{sup 0} in the vertical and horizontal directions, respectively. (control of laser radiation parameters)
  • The operating characteristics of a discharge-excited XeCl laser, which uses a screen electrode and UV preionization behind the screen, are reported. An output energy of 250 mJ and an efficiency of 2% were measured. The uniformity of the laser beam cross section extends to 60% of the total area with a 5% variation of the energy.
  • Within the framework of the tight-binding model we demonstrate that Wannier-Stark states can freely accelerate in uniform optical lattices. As opposed to accelerating Airy wave packets in free space, our analysis reveals that in this case the beam main intensity features self-bend along two opposite hyperbolic trajectories. Two-dimensional geometries are also considered and an asymptotic connection between these Wannier-Stark ladders and Airy profiles is presented.
