Energy and charge spectra of the ions in the case of micro-explosion at the surface of a metal introduced into a hot microwave plasma
- General Physics Inst. of Russian Academy Sciences, Moscow (Russian Federation); and others
A metal surface touching a hot, dense plasma may become a source of enhanced, local, surface energy releases yielding an explosive transition of a metal into the plasma state. Physically this process is close to the exposive-emission processes in vacuum diodes, which were discovered and described by G.A.Mesyats et al. (autoemission overloading the micropoints, which goes into the thermal emission and leads to the local explosion of a metal). A distinctive feature of the case under consideration is that the role of an anode in the diode is played by a hot plasma touching a metal body that serves as a cathode. A number of studies infer, on the basis of indirect experimental evident, that the energy release in explosive emission centers is extremely high (up to 1 MJ/cm{sup 3}) and is accompanied by formation of a hot and dense metal plasma in a surface region with a size of approximately 20-30 {mu}m.
