A general self-consistent theory is presented for one-dimensional stationary propagation of relativistically coupled electromagnetic and electrostatic waves in cold electron-ion plasma and the effects of electron-positron pair creation on this propagation are studied. A novel solution describing an envelope shock which represents a wakefield excitation by a solitary electromagnetic pulse is obtained by taking into account the trapping of the pair-created particles in the upstream region.
