This paper reviews theoretical and experimental investigations for the magnetohydrodynamic implosion concept, MAGO. It consists of a pre-heated magnetized DT-plasma with subsequent adiabatic compression by a liner imploded with a magnetic field. Pre-heating is performed in a special plasma chamber wherein magnetized plasma is accelerated in an annular nozzle up to velocities {approx}100 cm/{mu}s and heated by collisionless shock waves. Subsequent plasma compression up to ignition characteristics can be obtained using explosive magnetic generators with energy 100 to 500 MJ. The paper also discusses MAGO's plasma chamber and the physical effects essential for its operation. Due to its cylindrical symmetry with only a toroidal magnetic field component and the plasma described by of magnetohydrodynamics, the MAGO system and its problems are similar to those related systems, such as Z-pinches, plasma accelerators and liner systems.
