The flux density distribution in the central irradiation thimble of the TRIGA MARK II reactor was investigated carefully by neutron activation experiments on 16 nuclides. The experimental results were evaluated using the computer code STAY'SL. The neutron flux spectrum obtained in this way is found to agree well with neutronics calculations by the reactor manufacturer. The present analysis is is used to discuss reactor irradiation experiments in view of simulating the radiation environment of fusion reactor components.
