Title: Negative luminescence and devices based on this phenomenon

Abstract

Recent publications concerned with infrared emitters whose electrical modulation results in absorption of radiation detected as negative luminescence are reviewed. The main properties of the devices based on this phenomenon are analyzed.

  • The problem of nondestructive reading of the data stored in the interior of a photochromic sample was analysed. A comparison was made of the feasibility of reading based on one-photon and two-photon luminescence. A model was proposed for the processes of reading the data stored in photochromic molecules with the aid of one-photon and two-photon luminescence. In addition to photochromic transitions, account was taken of the transfer of populations between optically coupled transitions in molecules under the action of the exciting radiation. This model provided a satisfactory description of the kinetics of decay of the coloured form of bulk samplesmore » of spiropyran and made it possible to determine experimentally the quantum yield of the reverse photoreaction as well as the two-photon absorption cross section of the coloured form. Measurements were made of the characteristic erasure times of the data stored in a photochromic medium under one-photon and two-photon luminescence reading conditions. It was found that the use of two-photon luminescence made it possible to enhance considerably the contrast and localisation of the optical data reading scheme in three-dimensional optical memory devices. The experimental results were used to estimate the two-photon absorption cross section of the coloured form of a sample of indoline spiropyran in a polymethyl methacrylate matrix. • Fabrication of a 15 MW, 10 sec. negative-ion-based neutral beam injection system has been started for Large Helical Device (LHD). The system is composed of two tangential beam lines. Each beam line has two ion sources which are designed to deliver 40 A of negative hydrogen ions at the beam energy of 180 keV. The beam line has two vacuum chambers and a long gas neutralizer of 3.5 m between them. The first chamber is used as a gas expansion chamber of ion sources, and its gas pressure is controlled to keep the optimum line density for neutralization. The secondmore » chamber includes a magnetic bending system to deal with residual ions. The design is based on the results of our R&D on the large negative hydrogen ion source; the high density negative hydrogen ion production, high power beam extraction, and low beam divergence. The commissioning of the system will start in 1997, and the operation is scheduled in 1998. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}« less

  • Transparent P{sub 2}O{sub 5}-CaO-Na{sub 2}O glasses codoped with Er{sup 3+} and Yb{sup 3+} ions were fabricated by high-temperature melting technique. Strong near infrared and visible upconversion luminescence were observed under 975 nm laser diode excitation, and the luminescence processes were explained in details. For 1.54 {mu}m band, the calculated peak emission cross sections is 1.04x10{sup -20} cm{sup 2}, and it is better than that in germinate, tellurite, silicate, and other phosphate glasses. The near infrared upconversion emission around 828 nm contains two-photon and three-photon processes, and it is attributed to the transition {sup 4}S{sub 3/2}{yields}{sup 4}I{sub 13/2}, which enhances themore » population of the upper level for 1.54 {mu}m laser emission and reduces the energy loss due to upconversion. Efficient near infrared fluorescence indicates Er{sup 3+}/Yb{sup 3+} codoped phosphate glass is a promising laser and amplifier material.« less
