We review the development of cluster ideas in the following directions: the structural forbiddenness of heavy-nucleus fragmentation, the possibility of 'seeing' virtual excited clusters in a nucleus during the quasi-elastic knockout of clusters by {approx}1-GeV protons; the role of two-step mechanisms in direct nuclear reactions with clusters; the cluster-cluster potentials with forbidden states; the Moscow NN-interaction potential and quark microscopics; and the quasi-elastic knockout of mesons from a nucleon by high-energy electrons in quark microscopics.
