Resonant excitation of injected atomic ions in an ion trap mass spectrometer
Abstract
Resonant excitation of ion motion in an ion trap mass spectrometer(ITMS) is not a new idea. Most previous reports have characterized the resonant absorption profile (loss of observed ion signal versus excitation frequency) with respect to space charge, and the amplitude (V{sub ac}) and duration (T) of the excitation pulse. These reports have often focused on (single frequency) resonant excitation to effect collisionally induced dissociation for MS/MS. The authors report studies of single frequency and broadband resonant excitation applied to selective ion accumulation or ejection in elemental mass spectrometry.
