A new yttrium borate compound K{sub 3}Y{sub 3}(BO{sub 3}){sub 4} has been obtained in the K{sub 2}O-Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}-B{sub 2}O{sub 3} ternary system. Its structure, determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data, shows that it belongs to space group P2{sub 1}/c with unit cell dimensions of a = 10.4667(16) A, b = 17.361(3) A, c = 13.781(2) A and {beta} = 110.548(8){sup o}. The structure consists sheets of [Y{sub 8}B{sub 8}O{sub 24}]{sub {infinity}} linked by out of sheet BO{sub 3} groups and Y ions to form a three-dimensional framework. The luminescent properties of Eu{sup 3+} and Tb{sup 3+} doped K{sub 3}Y{sub 3}(BO{sub 3}){sub 4} materials have also been studied.
